August 3-5: A Short Stop at “Camp Monaco” in Coburg, Oregon

August 5, 2012
Coburg, Oregon

Sometimes, everything falls into place.  Once I made arrangements to have the cabinetry and refrigerator work done, and had the glass work lined up, I decided to tempt fate and line up one more service appointment.  I made arrangements to head for the Monaco Service Center for a Friday time slot to have one our the slides adjusted.  Now, they normally don’t take appointments for Friday since they use it as a catch up day to clear out work that may have run behind during the week.  I made my case that I knew exactly what needed to be done, that there were no parts involved (availability of parts is a key hangup sometimes), and that it was definitely only a few hours work.

The big risk, of course, was that we needed to be done with the glass and cabinet work by end-of-day Thursday.  Well, we finished up right at 5:00 PM, so we were off to Coburg, about 15 miles away (this part of Oregon is RV Central, with many shops located within a few miles of each other).

We parked, had a good night, and were up early.  I was in the office around 7:30 AM and our service writer was out to see exactly what needed to be done.  The coach was in the shop around 9:00 and we were free for the day (they no longer allow customers to see what’s happening in the shop).  We used the time to make a quick trip up to Ikea in Portland for a reclining chair to supplement our seating now that the second couch is gone.  We were all wrapped up by 3:00 PM or so, with the slide adjusted and tightened up.

As a post-script, it didn’t occur to me to “test drive” the cabinet work done earlier in the week, but I should have.  Who knew.  Well, it didn’t take too many corners to realize that we needed a few cabinets locks installed.  Since we were done early at Monaco, we shot back to see Scott and got the follow-up work done while we were still in the area.

Since it was warm and the forecast was hotter, we decided to head back to Monaco where we’d at least have a 50 amp power supply (the Elks Lodge was only 30A).  Since they allow Monaco Coach owners to overnight there for free on a space-available basis, we ended up staying Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights.  Saturday, I took a few hours and washed the coach and Rover, their first “bath” since we left Arizona at the end of April.  Today, we made a meal plan and did some shopping while we had “big city” stores handy.  Tomorrow morning, we’re off to the Oregon Coast...
